- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2024As a psychotherapist who does not specialize in eating disorders, I found this book incredibly articulate and accessible and have already mentioned it to two of my own clients. Nina is clear, gives great examples, and demonstrates exactly what she's talking about. She is consistently supportive, realistic and uplifting, making the connection between how we feel about ourselves, how we treat ourselves, and how that affects our eating patterns. She encourages a deeper trust in ourselves, and knowing what is good for us, once we can also be honest about what is emotionally in the way. Profoud.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2023After losing 80 lbs and maintaining for over a year and a half I hit a major life stress and started binging and overeating again. Through Dr Nina’s book I realized it’s not about micromanaging my macros and tracking every carb gram and calorie. It is not about WHAT I eat it’s about WHY I eat! Her brilliant insights and teachings about the “food mood formula” and why we turn to certain foods to manage certain emotions was life changing! She also has over 300 podcast and I start and end my day with an hour of listening and I am no longer making food my best friend or therapist. I have finally solved the puzzle of why I was obese at age 5 and have been a yo-yo dieter since I was out on my first restrictive diet at age 12 when I hit 200 lbs. Truly a life changing book that I am sharing with all in my life who struggle with an unhealthy relationship with food and don’t know why. Forever grateful! She also is accessible for one on one coaching and group coaching programs to go deeper if you need it! Access to an author is truly a gift!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2023Binge eating is a very serious problem that can affect people’s health, not only physical but mental as well, so it’s nothing to take lightly. Getting into the why’s someone would find comfort in eating can be it’s own thing to research but I think Binge Cure manages to address the most important factors related to this big problem.
As an emotional eater myself, I tend to eat mostly snacks when I’m bored or very stressed. Understanding and dealing with this problem can be very difficult to manage but I’m glad the approach this book took for it.
My favorite advice has to be the live in the moment one. It’s incredible how this can be easily applied when speaking about any problem. I appreciate how Binge Cure handled this health concern in an empathetic tone instead of blaming the individual. Very good read if you are trying to understand your eating habits a bit better!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2023I’m one of those people who are constantly looking for ways on how to create permanent, sustainable weight loss. I decided to pick up this book to see what I could learn about avoiding binge and emotional eating. Dr. Nina Savelle-Rocklin is a psychoanalyst who specializes in food, weight, and body image issues. So, I jumped at the chance to follow her advice. Since reading the book, I have been following the seven steps to stop emotional eating and I’ve been doing really well with it so far. Dr. Nina makes it very easy to find success. One of the most important steps is to live in the moment. We have to stop guilting ourselves for past mistakes with our diets, and try not to look too far in the future. Excellent book!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2019If you've ever struggled with emotional eating or binge eating, this book offers invaluable insights that really do help. So often we try this diet or that diet, only to regain the weight and feel worse about ourselves than we did before the diet. But this book helps you to understand when emotional triggers are causing you to mindlessly consume an entire bag of chips or carton of ice cream. And there is no judgment. Dr. Nina empathizes and helps explain why food can be so powerful as a means for soothing our emotional hunger and how to break free from it. I found it especially fascinating to learn about how certain types of foods correlate with certain emotions, or what she calls "the food-mood formula." And I found that the times I felt angry, I did in fact reach for those crunchy foods, whereas when I felt in need of comfort, I wanted ice cream. It also helped me notice how mean my inner critic can be and the fears that could be sabotaging my success. I highly recommend this book if you struggle with emotional eating.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2019I initially decided to buy this book because I listen to Dr. Nina's radio show whenever possible, and her philosophy and suggestions always resonate with me and with members of my family in immediate need of her advice and encouragement - attributes that, frankly, are in short supply in the world, but are really plentiful on these pages. She says it's not what you're eating that's the real problem, it's what's eating at you. What makes The Binge Cure different from other books I've read on the topic is that she identifies the "hidden" reasons you might be eating. Her focus, for both diagnosis and ongoing help, is not just dealing with the obvious ones you know. She helps you dig deep and focus on why you're eating. She puts feelings (the underlying root of the disorders and painful emotions she helps her listeners/patients, followers with), not on food.
I can relate to a lot of the examples of people she's worked with. The book is a fast, informative, helpful read. Just like on her show, Dr. Nina is relatable and caring as she explains the process of change and she also gives action steps to implement. Powerful stuff, and helpful.--
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024I couldn't take any more of this book. I'm glad people seem to have found success, but from the very beginning in chapter one, the author claims counting calories doesn't work and that food addiction isn't real. I went from 300 lbs to running a marathon by logging all my food. Most of my weight loss wasn't even healthy food, it was just limited to 1500 calories per day. I still have massive cravings to binge eat despite my success and hoped this book would help with that, but it was over simplified and contrived. I'm going to seek a better book.
